The Case for a Planning-Public Health Partnership

According to an article in the Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, both public health professionals and land use planners “aim to improve human well-being, emphasize needs assessment and service delivery, manage complex social systems, focus at the population level, and rely on community-based participatory methods.”2 In fact, historically, the goals of public health and planning were so aligned that two of the seven founders of the American Public Health Association were land use planners.
